Sati Devi, the eldest daughter of King Daksha and Queen Prasuti, is one of the revered goddess for Hindus. The story goes like - Lord Shiva (one of the Trinity) had come to ask for the hand of Sati Devi but he was refused and insulted by King Daksha. The King plotted and conspired to marry his daughter Sati Devi with lord Bishnu. One fine day lord Bishnu came to King Daksha to ask for the hand of Sati Devi, to which King Daksha happily agreed to. On the day of their wedding Bishnu created a situation where Sati Devi was married to Shiva who had participated in the event as a disguised Sage. King Daksha was very disappointed by this but Sati Devi accepted lord Shiva as her husband. Sati Devi and Shiva were leading a very happy married life in the Kailash. In the meantime, King Daksha organized a "yajna/yagya" where he invited all gods, goddess and prince(s) except his own daughter Sati Devi and Lord Shiva. So, displeased with her father action, Sati Devi went to the kingdom of Daksha Prajapati to question him. But Daksha yelled at her and treated her as an outcast. She could not tolerate the insult of her and her husband and took a divine form of goddess and cursed that the "yajna (yagya)" will never be completed and king Daksha would be killed by lord Shiva. She then sacrificed herself in the fire of "yagya".
When lord Shiva got the news of Sati Devi's death he carried the dead body of Sati Devi on his shoulders and performed the "tandav" which is the destruction dance for the universe, the more Shiva danced more destruction aroused. The other gods were very concerned about the stability of the universe. So, lord Bishnu transferred himself in the form of housefly and destroyed the body of Sati Devi into various parts, which fell over many places.
However, there is another myth that says that when Lord Shiva was in the shock of Sati Devi’s death he carried the smoldering body of Sati Devi and wandered all over the world. So, Lord Bishnu had to use his divine “Sudarshan Chakra” to destroy the body of Sati Devi, to bring back Lord Shiva to the orderly situation. Therefore, there is a belief that the various organs of Sati Devi had fallen into the different corners of the world and is worshipped as a religious site.
